It seems I have a few questions to answer (to some of my family, and perhaps friends) about one of my Etsy shoppes: TheSolitaryCircle https://etsy.me/2T5VGyL This particular shoppe of mine caters to “The Craft.”
I am a descendant of two accused witches burned at stake in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692: Mary Easty, and Rebecca Nurse. They were the sisters of my great-great-however-many-greats-grandfather. With that said, I am not Wiccan. I am not Pagan. I was born Protestant, and am now LDS (Mormon). Nevertheless, I like to think I am an open-minded person. I judge not; and I also love to learn.
Speaking of being LDS, I was just at the wedding of my second daughter. It was a beautiful Lutheran service. (No one in our family is Lutheran.) At the end of the ceremony, there was the usual, “’til death do you part?” I thought, (and I must have been thinking outloud) “Gee. That’s kinda…creepy. What about after death? Shouldn’t they be together “after?”
My lovely Catholic ex-sister-in-law said, “No.” We don’t believe that. And neither do Mormons. I said, “Yesss…we do; if you get married in the temple, you are “sealed” and will be together forever. Here AND “there.” She, my Catholic Ex Sis, said, “NO. I KNOW a lot of Mormons. And they don’t believe that.” (Okaaaay….cuz….I’m not Mormon??? So what would I know?) If she were any smarter, I could teach her to fetch.
I also have another very successful #EtsyShop: my long-standing, original store, TheTwoAcorns, selling vintage goods. Did I like vintage when I started it? HECK NO!! It was stinky and old weird stuff! Did I learn a LOT? YOU BET YOUR BUTTONS I DID! And I have a HUGE respect, and a load of knowledge about all sorts of that stuff now. I even have a huge LOVE for those beautiful items now! Wow….the history of most things is actually facinating!
So, back to my new shop, TheSolitaryCircle…
Is it SATANIC? No.
Is it DEMONIC? No.
Is it SINISTER? No.
MACABRE? FRIGHTENING? Is it just “TRASH?” Nope.
Does it LOOK creepy? Yep, a little bit! That’s why you need to learn before you open your mouth.
Many people wonder if you “need to be” Pagan or Wiccan to use herbs or essential oils for healing, to “cast spells,” and whatnot? No. To each his own. There is NO ONE RIGHT WAY to worship, meditate, pray, what-have-you. We are ALL (mostly all) aiming for the same thing: Love, Light, Goodness, Happiness, Health, Hope. We ALL (mostly all) meditate, write down our thoughts, light a candle, have a pipe-ceremony, take sacrament at church… it just depends on our culture! Most of us pray…to God, to “Good,” to God and Goddess, to Love, to the Universe, to the Collective Conscience, to Allah, Jehovah, WHOMEVER. The important part is, we are all “praying” to our own “power of good.” The End.
Just because I am not Wiccan does not mean I do not respect The Craft. It is a very natural, nature-based, peaceful way of living. A way that makes a lot of sense.
Do you use herbs for healing? Maybe you have a warm cup of Chamomile tea before bedtime? You might be a witch.
Do you use Essential Oils to heal different ailments? Or to affect your mood? You might be a witch.
Do you believe that crystals have energy? (That is NOT “magic.” That, my friends, is SCIENCE.) Do you own any Pyrite, Hematite, or Shungite to protect yourself from harmful EMF? You might be a witch.
Do you check to make SURE your front door is locked 253 times before bed? You might have OCD. 😉
Are you drawn to things when you take a walk? Do you pick up a feather, or random different rocks? Just because? You might be a witch.
But, wait a minute! WHAT ABOUT THE BOOK OF SHADOWS? “That’s a spell book!“
No. It’s not. It’s a blank journal to use for any desire you wish. Most “witches,” for instance, (Shhhhh…….here comes a big secret!) keep track of herbs, and what each herb is used for. (There are SO MANY uses…how else can you keep track?) That would be one section of The Book of Shadows.
Oils. This is another “section” for “The Secret Book,” (Your creepy BOS: “Potions.”) There are SO MANY beneficial uses for Essential Oils! It’s crazy! As well as so many different ways to “put them together” for different outcomes: Charlie Horses, headaches, insomnia, bug repellent, arthritis…I could go on forever. Not to mention, they (mostly) smell so delicious! Therefore you want to remember how many drops of what you used when something smells great, or works well!
Are spells written in that book? I’m sure they are! But what IS a spell?
A spell is a PRAYER. Period. An “intention,” if you will. Catholics “chant” over and over and over. That is their prayer. They pray to SAINTS. Well, I have done that too, and I also believe in that (a little bit). A lot of Pagans and Wiccans, light a candle –even a certain color candle for particular “intentions.” That is their prayer. Catholics light candles and KEEP THEM GOING. I believe the Catholic church waves that stinky incense all over the place at mass, too. Wiccans use incense as well. (But it smells much better.) The difference? Nothing.
Let’s talk about Smudging. That is a VERY sacred Native American belief that the Wiccans and many other “people” have taken on. Do I believe in cleansing a space? You bet I do! Is it evil to believe that? Not since I’ve last checked. Is it REAL? Does it REALLY do something? I don’t know. But if you believe it does, then yes, it’s real. It’s called Faith. Just like EVERY. OTHER. RELIGION. You must pray with faith or you can forget about it. When you “cast a spell,” you’d better do it with “intention,” or you can forget about it. Do you smell what I’m steppin’ in?
There are MANY studies on the placebo effect. I can’t give you statistics right now; you can Google them from a reliable source yourself. But one study was conducted in a hospital after some major surgeries. Half of the patients were given Morphine for pain relief; the other half were TOLD they were given Morphine. Although that second half received nothing but Saline. The results? They ALL had pain relief. The mind is very powerful. So if you use it the right way, you have got something very good going on. Thoughts are VERY powerful.
You are walking down a dark alley at 2am. “I think someone is following me,” you think! The hair on the back of your neck sticks up. You feel like you could run so fast you would win an Olympic medal if need be; your thinking is clearer, too. This is because your sympathetic nervous system has been activated due to the sudden release and rush of hormones. The SNS stimulates the adrenal glands, triggering the release of catecholamines, which include adrenaline and noradrenaline. This results in an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate . Your blood vessels get smaller in your extremities to give access of oxygen to more important places; organs! Your digestive system slows…your body is TOTALLY conserving energy in every way possible. WHY??? Because you THOUGHT. You thought someone was following you. But they weren’t. You completely freaked yourself out and made that up! And just LOOK at what your AMAZING BODY DID!!
So what happens when you think something POSITIVE? For example, “I have healthy cells and they regenerate perfectly.” Your thoughts are endless! “I am a lazy, slob.” Yep. You probably are. Or, “I am a productive, active, healthy human being.” It may take a while…but if you THINK it enough, YOU WILL BE.
Hence; “Wiccan Spells.” As long as what you are doing is positive, the more power to you! Nobody is HURTING anyone! In fact, the biggest “code,” the main part of the Wiccan rede is: “‘An’ it harm none, do what ye will'” – old-fashioned language for ‘as long as you aren’t harming anyone, do as you wish’. Many Wiccans also promote the Law of Threefold Return; a belief that anything that one does will be returned to them threefold. In other words, good deeds are magnified in like form back to the doer, and so are ill deeds. So now you can throw “evil” spells right out the door; and out of your noggin. Unless you love bad Karma comin’ atcha.
Oh gosh. Can’t forget the wicked Pentagram/Pentacle: Here is a photo of the Wiccan/Paganism belief. Read the article if you want to know more. (Please do) This symbol has been used for AGES. And in almost all religions.
Don’t bother me; I’m living happily ever after. I don’t know what your problem is, but I’ll bet it’s hard to pronounce.
